Jerry Hamilton is a doctoral candidate at the University of Alabama’s Department of Mechanical Engineering. His research is focused on materials compatibility with sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). The main areas of concentration are with the complex interactions of O-ring elastomers of different compositions and characteristics various types of synthetic paraffinic kerosene (SPK) along with a unique synthetic aromatic kerosene (SAK). Jerry has designed and built novel equipment to measure the changing forces of the O-rings when introduced to flowing fuel, ambient and fuel temperature changes, and measuring the forces required for O-ring compression.

Jerry’s research supplements the Gas Turbine Combustion Lab with vital information on novel fuel compatibility. Knowledge gained from his research allows for combustion testing to occur without damage to the test cell engines. This important research lends to the overall goal of reducing the harmful byproducts of aviation fuel combustion.

He is married with four children and served 20 years in the US Army as a helicopter instructor pilot with multiple combat tours. He was medically retired as a Chief Warrant Officer 4 after receiving a Purple Heart in Afghanistan in 2012. Jerry has bachelors’ degrees in Professional Aeronautics from Embry–Riddle Aeronautical University and Mathematics from Troy University.
