Jonathan Tobias is a Ph.D. student and researcher in the Engines and Combustion Lab (ECL) at The University of Alabama (UA). Jonathan earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering with an Aerospace concentration from the University of Dayton in 2015 and worked as a research intern at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) assisting combustion testing. In the Fall of 2016, Jonathan joined the ECL under Dr. Ajay Agrawal where their team of researchers built the annular Rotating Detonation Engine (RDE) test facility, performing their first successful RDE test in May 2017.
Jonathan’s research is focused on experimental characterization of the exhaust flow field downstream of the annular RDE through high-speed laser diagnostics known as Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). This research serves as a milestone by experimentally characterizing highly periodic and turbulent flow fields to drive RDE design towards in-situ applications. Jonathan has experience with various optical diagnostic techniques. He is interested in a range of combustion topics including detonation engines, gas turbines, thermo-acoustics, and emissions.
