Mitchell Johnson is a PhD candidate in the Engines and Combustion Laboratory (ECL) at the University of Alabama. Mitchell joined the ECL as an undergraduate in 2014, primarily studying industrial burners, and transitioned to combustion dynamics and instability for his graduate studies in 2018. His research focuses on identifying the mechanisms which facilitate the effectiveness of porous media for eliminating combustion instability in lean combustion systems. He applies optical and acoustic diagnostics to identify the means of coupling of acoustic and combustion processes, and the ways in which porous media degrade these coupling mechanisms.
